Escala the Essentials: Disaster Recovery
Ensuring rapid recovery after
a disaster is key to success for any organization
Not just a simple option: a requirement
Recent tragic events woke companies up to the inherent risks
of their information processing systems and
now see them as an essential company resource, their loss able
to jeopardize the company’s stability. With that
in mind, it is important to take preventive
measures before a disaster occurs, not only to guarantee data
protection, but especially to ensure a rapid
return to normal operations. A disaster recovery solution
is part of an overall business recovery plan that examines
all the ramifications of a disaster on the
overall business. Generally it includes the restoration
of the central system and telecommunications, making use of
a geographically distant backup site.
Which criteria should be taken into account?
Whatever the solution adopted, it is necessary to identify
the applications and the data within the information
system that the end-user is in direct contact with, in order to
define their criticality. For each application, the disaster
recovery objectives can be defined by the following two independent parameters:
•
Data freshness or Recovery Point Objective (RPO):
some applications can tolerate the use of
older data, whereas others are extremely
vulnerable to the loss of data.
•
Recovery Time Objective (RTO): some
applications can put up with a longer
restart time, whereas others need an
almost instantaneous restart
