Belgian aerospace manufacturer Sonaca chooses Bull for its new Unix platforms and migration of its SAP environment

Sonaca, which specializes in the design, manufacture and certification of aerospace structures for major aeronautical companies including Airbus, Embraer and Dassault Aviation, has chosen Bull Escala servers to run its new SAP platforms.

Building on its extensive AIX™ experience and SAP technical expertise, Bull has also carried out the necessary migration work from an SAP R/3 environment running under HP-UX to its Escala servers running under AIX™, within the very tight deadlines required by Sonaca.
The migration work involved:
•  An SAP R/3 environment, including development, test and production systems for the following applications: Stock Management, Finance, Accounting, Sales and Maintenance;
•  An Oracle environment for development and production databases;
• An SAP BW (Business Warehouse) environment, with both a development and a production system.

William Van Malderen, Managing Director of Bull Belgium commented: “At Bull we follow one guiding principle, all the time and for every project, which is all about customer satisfaction. We applied this commitment throughout our work for Sonaca, and we are really proud to be able to include this prestigious company, which plays an important part in the Belgian economy, amongst our new customers. This new case study equally confirms our ability to successfully deliver significant migration projects in heterogeneous environments.”

The Bull and Sonaca teams also implemented a dual-site cluster using the HACMP and SRDF tools to ensure a high level of service and total data security. The environments are distributed between the two locations, and clustering and remote data replication techniques have been used to ensure high availability and disaster protection.

According to Bernard Bury, Information Systems Director of Sonaca: “The Bull team involved in this migration fulfilled their assignment with great professionalism. The dedicated consultants demonstrated their creativity and determination in implementing their solution within the set timescales.”

Sonaca was very satisfied with the migration, even though Bull came on to this project, with all its attendant risks, as a new supplier.

As Bernard Bury confirms: “Just a month before we made our final choice of IT partner, Bull was not even on the shortlist of potential candidates! But they won the contract as a result of their good understanding of our requirements, their commercial dynamism, their flexibility and their desire to re-establish themselves as a ‘solution provider’ to be reckoned with.” Bernard Bury is expecting a great deal more from this new collaboration, and as a result he is keen to, “confirm the quality of Bull’s services over the longer term”.
