Nick, Human Resources Manager for North, Central & Eastern Europe

What is most challenging about your day-to-day job?
I’m the Human Resource Manager for North, Central and Eastern Europe; which represents 500 people in 20 different countries. It's a challenging and rewarding role that crosses many nationalities and cultures. The one common denominator across this diverse geography is the passion to grow the business. That’s also the objective of Human Resources. I find myself undertaking a role that has no boundaries but is essential if Bull is going to succeed in an increasingly competitive market (competitive for people, products and services).

I travel frequently during the week, ensuring that I maximise my time assisting the General Managers on operational issues and helping them secure, develop and reward a workforce that delivers results for their organisation. Much of my time is also spent with employees within the operation: communicating business results, assisting them in their development and enhancing their careers. Often Human Resources is taken out of context: in Bull, HR is committed, not to managing people but to providing the means and structure for managers to manage their employees more effectively and indeed for employees to manage themselves more independently. People are the competitive edge – they matter!

"Working for Bull" what does it mean for you?
I’ve worked for many multinationals in my career, but Bull is different. It is not too big that you become a small cog in a large wheel, neither is it too small that there is no foundation. What Bull does, that others do not do, is to give employees the autonomy and freedom to make a real difference in their day-to-day roles. This freedom fuels the passion which in turn drives the creativity that gives Bull its competitive edge. And what’s more, people can turn around and take a look at how their input has impacted the business – this to me is the most important aspect of working at Bull.

How would you describe Bull in Europe?
To being with, we are 6,500 people across 27 European countries. But more than that, Bull is the only European IT manufacturer, we have our own subsidiaries in a lot of European countries and we win frequently large IT projects across the continent. Just to give you an example, we implemented the Schengen customs IT system for six of the ten countries who joined the European Union in 2004, and Bull provided the security that protected all the data exchanges between over 1,000 engineers in six different countries during the design of Dassault-Aviation’s new Falcon 7x business jet. Bull has a bright future. It has changed tremendously over the past two years, and continues to evolve to meet market needs whilst delivering profitable business for its shareholders.
