Windows migration improves performance and decreases costs |
| Suez decided to boost its operational
efficiency: sliming its administrative cost, implementing
a new software infrastructure, retaining applications,
modernizing their server and desktop environments. They
also wanted to improve system reliability and performance,
security and backup procedures.
As a consequence, migrating the operating system,
the office automation tools and the electronic mail
had become essential. Bull carried out the migration
of Windows 95 workstations and Office 97 to the most
recent version of Windows and Office, and the Novell
directory to Microsoft Active Directory.
The backup infrastructure was modernised with the
installation of a high-speed broadband network, a Storage
Area Network (SAN), while security and system availability
would benefit from a Windows server clustered architecture.
In addition, the consolidation of servers significantly
reduced the administration costs

Italian municipalities
 |
 |
Citizen Portal: a solution that provides
interactive services via Internet |
Italian municipalities offer
portal services to their citizens and enterprises that
include Internet access to interactive services such
as administrative and self-certification documents, tax
payment, and e-learning.
Identity and Access Management for the solution are
supported by Microsoft Identity Integration Server
(IIS) combined with a user authentication provided
by the national Electronic Identity Card (Smart Card).
The solution runs on a highly-available configuration
based on a Bull platform under Windows Server 2003,
using Microsoft clustering and load balancing features.
Bull developed the portal solution using Microsoft
Visual Studio .NET with integration of XML/XSL, Microsoft
SQL Server, and Microsoft IIS. The architecture based
on Web Services and XML makes an easy integration with
municipalities back-office vertical applications.
Finally, it provides a fast and easy access to the
services, it streamlines the associated costs

Czech Customs
 |
 |
Infrastructure with NovaScale for central
data warehouse and portal |
Once the Czech Republic had
become a EU member, the Czech Customs had to provide
various new services in addition to their traditional
activities (collecting duties, levy taxes and other contributions
to the state budget). They are: administration of the
European common tariff, statistical registration of external
trade with other countries, monitoring and control of
business and agricultural policy, fight against organised
crime. These new services require close cooperation with
European customs authorities and a daily exchange of
huge data files with the European Commission’s
systems.
The new infrastructure is based on Microsoft SQL Server
and Bull NovaScale servers. It gives Customs Administration
a connection to the European customs information systems.
This new infrastructure leads to a statistical registration
of international trade, a high-performance data warehouse,
to detect irregularities and targeting financial fraud
and corruption of customs procedures.

Conforama
 |
 |
Deploying a Business Intelligence solution
on Bull NovaScale server |
Conforama deployed a Business
Intelligence solution to increase its performance and
quality of the services.
The Business Intelligence solution was the first worldwide
implementation of a SQL Server 64-bit version, running
under Windows Server 2003. The complete solution includes
an ETL (Extract, Transfer and Loading) tool, a database
and multi-dimensional OLAP engine (Analysis Services)
enabling the computation and storage of cubes for fast
retrieval as well as functional data display.
The hardware platform is a 64-bit Bull NovaScale 5080,
based on a 8-way server architecture. This infrastructure
is able to support up to 2,000 users and several terabytes
of data. In addition the scalability of the new infrastructure
has allowed Conforama to create and process new business
indicators, while handling larger data workloads.
Easy and fast to implement, this solution provides
the lowest transaction costs on the market, supports
high volumes of data and features high-performance
processing capacity for complex queries.
