Bull, Architect of an Open World,
launches new NovaScale 7000 server family
The new NovaScale 7000 servers demonstrate all Bull's capabilities in implementing open architectures that deliver greater flexibility and performance, with lower costs and high levels of reliability
Paris,
November
15, 2005 -
Bull today unveils its new family of NovaScale® 7000 servers. Based on industry-standard technologies, they are designed to provide greater openness, flexibility and power for data centers already running GCOS 7 applications, along with mainframe-class reliability and robustness.
NovaScale 7000 servers are capable of running GCOS 7, Linux® and Windows® environments simultaneously: creating opportunities for server consolidation, and so helping to simplify operations and reduce costs significantly.
The servers in the new NovaScale 7000 range provide total compatibility between GCOS 7 applications and earlier DPS 7000 systems. As a result, GCOS 7 applications can take full advantage of the new server environments without any need for modifications or recompiling. So no additional investment is required, and implementation can be achieved in very short timescales.
The NovaScale 7000 series is based on the same underlying technologies at the heart of the existing, highly successful NovaScale high-end servers: in particular, the NovaScale FAME architecture and Intel® Itanium® 2 processors. These technologies were a decisive factor in the French Atomic Energy Authority's decision to choose Bull to build Europe's most powerful supercomputer.
Already, French insurance company Mutuelles nationales des hospitaliers has chosen to host its GCOS 7 applications and its new Linux applications on a NovaScale 7000 server.
Today's announcement is totally in line with Bull's strategy to offer GCOS customers evolutionary paths for their systems that combine all the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of open systems, with mainframe-class availability and reliability. This strategy has already achieved wide acceptance with the many GCOS 8 customers who have replaced their DPS 9000 proprietary mainframes with NovaScale 9000 servers.
NovaScale 7000 delivers significant added value in four key areas:
1) Ensuring straightforward interoperability between GCOS 7 applications, and Linux® and Windows® applications;
2) Providing access to industry standards for GCOS 7applications: whether this relates to software (from Oracle® databases and SAP® ERP solutions, to Web Services and Java applets) or storage devices (from SAN networks to backup systems and Fibre Channel connexions);
3) Ensuring significantly improved flexibility, through partitioning functionality;
4) Offering the opportunity to consolidate several heterogeneous servers onto a single NovaScale 7000, thus reducing information systems costs and simplifying the administration of both servers and applications.
"The new NovaScale 7000 family of servers demonstrates all Bull's capabilities in implementing new-generation open architectures that combine major cost reductions with greater flexibility, reliability and performance. They are a powerful illustration of Bull's strength in innovation and confirm the Group's ability to deliver against its strategic commitments. For customers running GCOS 7, Bull's world-renowned operating system, they offer the ideal upgrade path for the modernization of their infrastructures," confirms Michel Lepert, Bull's General Manager, Products and Systems.
Key features of the new NovaScale 7000 server family
The new NovaScale 7000 range comprises the NovaScale 7160 and 7320 offering 16 and 32 Intel® Itanium® 2 processors respectively. Their physical partitioning features enable to run Linux® and Microsoft® Windows® in coexistence with GCOS 7, on a single server.
In order to simplify and automate the process of infrastructure management, Bull has developed the NovaScale Master integrated systems administration tool, capable of interfacing with existing system supervision systems. With its advanced event capture and processing functions, NovaScale Master provides comprehensive administration and management, control and supervision capabilities for operating systems and associated software.
