So far, large enterprise servers could only operate in proprietary environments, in order to provide both optimum reliability and the capability to manage large volumes of data as well as multiple transactional sessions. Only mainframes and Unix proprietary servers were able to run large enterprise critical applications.

Today, thanks to technological breakthroughs achieved with servers based on Intel® processors, running Linux, mainframe-class functionalities with the openness and cost-effectiveness of standard environments can be provided.
