OpenSave

Saving and archiving enterprise data

OpenSave is a software and hardware solution that offers high-performance data backup for all servers within an enterprise, allowing for DLT type or 3490 (1/2 inch) libraries to be shared between Bull DPS 7000 enterprise servers and open systems.

Server

The OpenSave server software guarantees the integrity of the information system's data by automating the backup function for all platforms. All backup/restore functions, from data transfer via channel or network, to cataloging and driving peripherals are carried out in total security.

Clients

The client program is installed on each system to be backed up, and dialogs with the server in exactly the same way regardless of the environment (GCOS 7, UNIX, Windows NT, Windows 95, Oracle, Sybase, Informix, SQL Server, etc.).

Peripherals

The OpenSave library managers control the peripherals used for backup and dynamically allocate the drives according to requests from different clients. OpenSave can integrate Overland and StorageTek robots that use DLT (Digital Linear Tape) technology and ½ inch 18/36 tracks, giving a broad choice of libraries from 10 to 588 cartridges, according to archiving needs.

Administration

An ergonomic and friendly graphic interface allows for an intuitive exchange between the administrator and the program. This interface can be moved to any point of the local or extended network.

With a simple click of the mouse, the administrator can identify and visualize the following:

  • backup strategy of client machines,
  • planning for each backup (starting date and time) using calendars
  • media management (usage rules, time limit, formatting),
  • peripheral management (status of drives and libraries, ejection/insertion of magnetic media),
  • tracking of planned backups, whether in progress or completed,
  • the various files to backup/restore displayed in a graphic File Manager in the form of a file "tree".

Distinctive Characteristics of OpenSave

Performance

For systems with significant usage limitations, direct data channels to libraries allow for very high transfer rates. These channels rely on GALILEO controllers using RISC PowerPC technology that delivers:

  • direct channel connection for rapid backup of Bull DPS 7000 systems and UNIX,
  • task-oriented dynamic allocation of cartridge drives,
  • quick access to data on DLT medias: a file and volume allocation table enables direct access to a given file always within 10 seconds to 3 minutes, irrespective of the number and size of the backed up files on the tape.

Modularity

The client/server architecture of the OpenSave software is designed to adapt to the specific environment of each organization (type and number of machines, geographic dispersion, centralization or decentralization policy, volume limitations, time allotted, security, etc.).

In addition, a new generation of library management integrated in OpenSave can implement any backup strategy, such as the following:

  • backups centralized on one site equipped with backup methods,
  • backups spread between a central site and several secondary distant sites, all equipped with backup methods,
  • backups completely spread out over several major sites with one central administration post.

Openness and Portability

The totally open architecture of the product and the choice of customized hardware and software solutions make the OpenSave package very flexible and modifiable.

OpenSave operates independently of constructor platforms, operating systems, and drive and robot technologies.

To allow for exchanges with systems that are not equipped with OpenSave, data is registered on standard magnetic media (POSIX 1003.1) that can be read with the native system commands.

Having a full set of commands, OpenSave interfaces with standard management and administration tools (OpenMaster or others).

Easy installation and utilization

Installation of the OpenSave software on the server and client systems is quick and easy. You do not require a thorough knowledge of the UNIX, Novell, Windows NT or GCOS 7 operating systems, to be trained for and to use this product.
