Bull NovaScale® 9000 Series

The new generation of GCOS 8 enterprise servers based on Intel® Itanium® 2 processors and Bull's FAME architecture

Protected investments, openness and mainframe disciplines

The servers of the Bull NovaScale 9000 Series run GCOS 8 Operating System using standard building blocks and execute existing GCOS 8 customer applications without change (binary compatible).

Each server integrates the GCOS 8 and Open environments, allowing extensive cooperation between the applications of the two worlds.

Bull NovaScale 9000 Series provides reliability and robustness that characterize mainframes, allied with constantly falling costs of acquisition and ownership. It completes the current GCOS 8 platform offer, Bull DPS 9000/TA200 and TA300.

The Bull NovaScale 9000 Series includes the following servers:

  • NovaScale 9165 and 9325

These servers offer an evolution path mainly for users of the Bull DPS 9000/500 (RPMII), Bull DPS 9000/700 (Jupiter 1) and Bull DPS 9000/TA (Olympus) systems, to which they bring greater power, more openness, new functions of the SR6.1 version of GCOS 8, inclunding 64 bits native mode, and a significant improvement in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).

The NovaScale 9165 and 9325 servers are based on dual core Intel® Itanium® 2 processors. They benefit from advanced physical partitioning features and provide more power and flexibility to simultaneously run GCOS 8, Microsoft® Windows® 2003 and Linux® (Read Hat or SuSE).

The GCOS 8 partitions are available in 48 models supporting up to 12 processors dedicated to GCOS 8.
They offer power for GCOS 8 applications of up to 6300 TPS (transactions per second).

Each GCOS 8 physical partition can run up to three copies of GCOS 8, making the Logical Partitioning (LGP) a new feauture similar to Virtual Machine Facility (VMF) on Olympus.

The DBSP (Data Base Server Processor) available on NovaScale 9165 and 9325 servers is based on a Linux® Red Hat physical partition, linked to the GCOS 8 partition via an InfiniBand link.

A strategy for the long term

The Bull NovaScale 9000 Series as been developed within the Helios program which involves hundreds of R&D people from Bull.

In the coming months and years, Bull NovaScale 9000 Series will be constantly enhanced to provide GCOS 8 customers with more power and openness, the reliability and robustness that characterize mainframes, better price/performance ratios offered by standard building blocks, and improved connectivity for enterprise’s applications.
