MicroFocus Cobol Year 2000 Restrictions
MicroFocus Cobol versions 3.2
and 4.0 (from Bull's partner Merant) are not fully Year 2000
ready since a problem has been found with the Fileshare Rollforward Recovery utility. This
utility will give some incorrect results in the next century in some circumstances as
shown in the example below.
Currently the date format within the update records is
YYMMDDHHMMSS, and will obviously remain the same for compatibility reasons. Imagine the
following situation:
- On January 1, 2000, you are updating your data files. At
that moment, the system crashes and your data files are corrupted.
- Your last data file backups were made on November 12, 1999.
- Your data files were updated in December 1999.
- So you need to restore your data files as they were on
December 31, 1999. This is done using the old backups and the log files since the backups
were made. The command will be fs -r database -dt 991231235959. Unfortunately this will
include updates made on January 1, 2000, and this is exactly what you don't want.
Currently, there is no other known problem in these
versions.
MicroFocus Cobol version 4.1.10
is the first Year 2000 ready version.
Bull strongly recommends to migrate to MicroFocus Cobol
Version 4.1.10 compiler (called OCDS) and run-time (called Application Server). This
version includes also the MicroFocus Cobol Toolbox and 'Dialog System' tools in standard.
