FAQ

The three main operating systems are: 

  • AIX (UNIX developed by IBM with cooperation from Bull between 1992 and 2022, known for its robustness and ability to handle heavy workloads); 

  • Linux, notably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), which is certified on Escala (known for its standardisation and commercial support);   

  • IBM i, which integrates a database (often used for processing financial transactions and running business applications requiring high availability and reliability). 

ARF, or Application Rollover Facility, is a HA/DR solution developed by Bull in France since 2002 that makes it easy to move an application from one partition to another in order to ensure availability of your application, if you get maintenance or system / hardware failure. It uses storage array replication technology, and since the solution is storage-agnostic, it is not limited to IBM array brands. 

OEM Escala and Bull R&D began collaborating with IBM research centers, notably in Austin, Texas, in 1992 to work on AIX, SMT technology, Live partition Mobility, Live Update, the kernel debugger (kdb), etc.
